[The holodeck seems to be a little like that one toy you get at Christmas which every kid wants to have a go at playing with, and if the surroundings visible through the sphere when it starts broadcasting are any indication, Lyle is no exception to the rule.

He must have been there for a few minutes because the thing's already been set to look like a pretty normal street, with the sun's shining on it. There's a young woman standing in the middle of this setting. Even if she wasn't pretty - which she is - she wouldn't be the sort of person you'd easily miss in a crowd, with her unusual colouring - light purple hair and red eyes aren't common even in Lyle's universe.

So where's Lyle in all this? He's standing off to one side with an odd smile on his face, not really doing anything other than watching.

Oh, and he hasn't realised that his sphere's on either. :D]

More about those suits, I suppose. I had an...interesting conversation with a young man who claims to fly one as well, but I don't know who in their right mind would let him near one!

Oh, you mean the AEU's old ace. I've heard stories about him.

"Old ace"? So he's from your past then?

That's the way this ship goes...

Anyway, about those mobile suits...? [trails off, hoping to prompt lyle into talking about them.]

They're how most wars are fought these days.

[frowns] Somehow, that doesn't surprise me.

Not much seems to surprise you, Doctor.

They're still a relatively new thing, though. It wasn't till around the time of the Solar Wars that they became really widespread. After that, the three power blocs were always competing to be the one that had the most advanced mobile suit.

Not when you get to be as old as I am.

Solar Wars? D'you mean to tell me people were fighting over solar power?

filter;

[identity profile] not-that-lockon.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
More or less. All the economies of the countries that used to provide fossil fuels for power took a nosedive after the elevators were finished, and that's what kicked off most of the wars. There were all these blocks in place on exporting fossil fuels. [he shrugs] I guess that they just couldn't cope with the UN's demands.

[runs a hand through his hair, marvelling at how it all could get so messed up.] But it's solar power! It's free! Surely the technology to harness it is widely available like food and water by your time?!

filter;

[identity profile] not-that-lockon.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Not when each power bloc has control of one of the things that's used to help provide the power.
bit_impossible: (Doctor-...Really?)

filter;

[personal profile] bit_impossible 2009-04-03 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[sneers slightly] Figures, exploiting a free power source for capital gain...

So, because of this control, the power blocs have to create something to protect those orbital lifts, right? Is that why the mobile suits were made, to squash the competition?

filter;

[identity profile] not-that-lockon.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
More like that's why they began to be mass-produced.
bit_impossible: (Doctor-You think so?)

filter;

[personal profile] bit_impossible 2009-04-03 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh? And how 'bout the initial creation?

filter;

[identity profile] not-that-lockon.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's kinda before my time, but I know that people were coming up with them and testing them out for years.
bit_impossible: (Doctor-That's good right?)

filter;

[personal profile] bit_impossible 2009-04-03 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[nods. didn't expect such development to happen overnight.]

And you're a pilot of one of these then! [he has to ask; he's waited long enough to.] What's it like?

filter;

[identity profile] not-that-lockon.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[dryly] Well, I could do without the G-forces.

[then he grins slightly] But when I actually have time to appreciate the flight instead of concentrating on other things, it's pretty amazing.
bit_impossible: (Doctor-*Head scratch*)

filter;

[personal profile] bit_impossible 2009-04-03 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you get used to them, eventually. How much does your mobile suit generate?

[smiles too] Can't exactly take one of those out for a joyride, can you?

filter;

[identity profile] not-that-lockon.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not entirely sure, but it's bearable, at least.

Not really. Threat to security and all.

Yeah... But didn't you ever want to though? Bend the rules and just take it out? I wouldn't mind trying my hand at flying one of those!

filter;

[identity profile] not-that-lockon.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
More than once, actually. But I like my limbs just fine in the places that they are now.

Ahh, is that Tieria fellow that kind of an enforcer who'd break your limbs as punishment? Bit counter productive, those suits of yours don't seem very easily to pilot with just one arm.

[makes a slight face] Probably the least of your worries...

So where do you, Tieria, and there was a couple more of you, weren't there? Where do you all fit into this struggle for solar energy?
